Low levels of agricultural productivity, reduced soil fertility and severe land degradation present threats for the food security as well as the environmental situation in many Sub-Saharan African countries. This calls for strategies towards a more sustainable agricultural development. The aim of this project is to investigate the effects of methods to educate smallholder farmers in Ethiopia on a technology called Integrated Soil Fertility Management (ISMF). The core of ISFM is the combined use of organic and inorganic soil amendments as a strategy to increase soil fertility and productivity, while at the same time tackling land degradation. In order to disseminate information on ISFM and to spur its adoption, new approaches for farmer education were implemented and tested within the rigorous experimental design of a Randomized Controlled Trial (RCT). Firstly, the effects of a participatory extension approach based on model farmers, agricultural learning groups and demonstration plots are tested. In addition, we assess the effectiveness of video as a complementary method. The study is conducted within the ISFM+ project of the German Corporation for International Cooperation (GIZ) in the Ethiopian highlands.
